Synopsis

Hitomi Kanzaki, a 15-year-old schoolgirl with a fascination for tarot and fortune telling, is abruptly pulled from her ordinary life when a young man named Van Fanel falls to Earth amid a ferocious dragon attack. After a vision allows Van to slay the beast, a pillar of light engulfs them and transports Hitomi to Gaea, a strange world where the planet floats in the sky. There she learns Van is heir to Fanelia, a kingdom soon assaulted by the expansionist Zaibach Empire. Van attempts to repel the invaders by piloting his family's ancient guymelef, Escaflowne, but Fanelia is ultimately devastated. Forced into exile, Hitomi and Van cross paths with Allen Schezar, an Asturian knight who bears an uncanny resemblance to someone from Hitomi's life on Earth. Joined by new companions, they resist Zaibach as the empire seeks to awaken a long-dormant power, navigating loss, unexpected bonds, and the mysteries of Gaea.
