Synopsis

Four ordinary men from modern-day Japan are brought to the kingdom of Melromarc to serve as its champions against long-standing destructive phenomena called the Waves of Catastrophe. Each is granted a different weapon—a sword, spear, bow, and shield—to counter the recurring disasters. Naofumi Iwatani, an otaku, is assigned the shield and immediately faces derision for his defensive armament and reserved demeanor. While the other heroes receive support and training partners, Naofumi trains with the sole willing companion, Malty Melromarc, who betrays him and falsely accuses him of wrongdoing. This leads to widespread scorn and discrimination from Melromarc’s populace. Bearing hurt and distrust, Naofumi resolves to improve his abilities and reputation. Isolated and struggling, he acquires a dying demi-human slave, Raphtalia, who becomes his traveling companion and ally. As the Waves draw near, Naofumi and Raphtalia must confront the impending threats to Melromarc and strive to protect its people from the disasters that have long plagued the kingdom.
