Kyoutarou Ichikawa presents as a timid, withdrawn middle-school boy whose private imagination harbors violent intentions toward his classmate Anna Yamada. He fantasizes about causing her suffering, yet his recurring encounters with her in the school library reveal aspects of her personality he had not expected: a somewhat oblivious, airheaded demeanor that contrasts with her outwardly composed appearance. As Ichikawa spends more time near Yamada, his feelings shift from hostility to a conflicted affection and a strong urge to keep her safe. This internal reversal forces him to confront the dissonance between his original murderous fixation and the protective, caring impulses that emerge as their interactions continue, raising the question of whether his changing perspective could evolve into something different.
