Synopsis

Maomao, skilled in both remedies and toxins, has been central to uncovering conspiracies and resolving mysteries that afflict the imperial court. After confronting family secrets, she resumes her duties serving the emperor’s chief consorts and collaborates with the eunuch Jinshi to improve the lives of the consorts’ attendants, including teaching them literacy. When a merchant caravan arrives, a series of odd links between the travelers and their goods prompts Maomao to probe the unsettling sequence of events surrounding the convoy. Facing threats from external sources and internal rivalries that jeopardize the concubines’ stability, Maomao relies on her intellect and medical expertise to investigate the unfolding intrigue and to protect the women under her care.
