Synopsis

Maomao, once the daughter of an apothecary, is torn from a tranquil existence and forced into servitude at the imperial palace. Now reduced to the status of a common maid, she conceals her deep knowledge of medicine to avoid drawing attention. Soon after she arrives, the emperor's infant offspring develop severe, unexplained illnesses that resemble a supernatural affliction. Maomao deciphers the cause with ease and, preferring anonymity, tries to pass along her findings anonymously. Her attempt fails when Jinshi, an astute and handsome eunuch, detects her involvement and identifies her. Acknowledging her ability, the court elevates Maomao to the position of lady-in-waiting for Gyokuyou, the emperor's favored consort. As she continues to treat the recurring maladies that plague palace life, Maomao's skill with remedies becomes increasingly vital to those around her, even as she strives to remain unobtrusive.
