In war-torn Sengoku-era Japan, orphan Kotarou and his dog Tobimaru survive by pilfering from villagers. Their precarious existence collapses when agents from the Ming court begin pursuing Kotarou for reasons unrelated to his petty thefts. During an attack that leaves Tobimaru poisoned, the pair encounter Nanashi, a wandering ronin sheltering at a small temple. Nanashi intervenes to fend off their attackers but initially intends no further involvement. Facing desperation, Kotarou offers a precious gem to secure Nanashi’s protection until Tobimaru recovers and they can reach their intended destination. Reluctantly accepting the role of bodyguard, the ronin sets out with Kotarou and the injured dog. As they travel, the stakes rise: the Ming have dispatched a formidable swordsman to seize Kotarou and bring about a foretold outcome, turning the journey into a hazardous struggle for survival and unveiling a larger destiny tied to the boy.
