Synopsis

Maetel left her mother and the icy world of La Metal, where residents must undergo cybernetic transformation to endure. Summoned back, she faces a narrow set of choices: follow her mother’s example and adopt a robotic consciousness—accepting alienation from humans—or reject that fate and align with humans in opposition to the machines. Along the way she finds allies among sentient metal beings who seek peaceful coexistence; by embracing their companionship while challenging the view that mere human flesh defines personhood, she may yet carve out a different future for herself.
