Synopsis

Set in 1920s Japan, this story follows Benio, an energetic, athletic young woman determined to shape her own life. She initially clashes with Shinobu, a handsome half-German soldier who repeatedly aids her through awkward situations. Unexpectedly informed that she is promised in an arranged marriage, Benio discovers her intended is Shinobu, forcing her to reconcile her independence with the prospect of marriage. The narrative explores Benio’s efforts to accept marital responsibilities, adapt to her new relations and employer, and manage the practical and emotional challenges that arise as Shinobu faces military service. The atmosphere mixes personal growth, household and social negotiations, and the tension of impending large-scale upheaval as the Great Kanto earthquake approaches.
