Synopsis

After catastrophic quakes leave much of Japan in decay and overtaken by vegetation, a new social order emerges where states tightly control emissions and wealth concentrates. The national government creates Project Atlas, an idealized city intended to replace Tokyo but limited in capacity, forcing many people to exist outside its walls as displaced residents in the surrounding jungles. Opposition rises around that inequality. Key figures include Kuniko Houjou, heir to an autonomous settlement; Mikuni, a powerful, enigmatic child hidden within a secluded temple; Kunihito Kusanagi, an Atlas soldier bound to the city's exclusive, advanced authority; Karin Ishida, a brilliant economist entangled in global markets; and Ryouko Naruse, who steers Atlas toward oppressive dominance. These disparate individuals coalesce into a resistance called Metal-Age, seeking through cooperation and solidarity to counter the segregation and domination imposed by Project Atlas.
