Synopsis

A darkly comedic slice-of-life series centers on Nozomu Itoshiki, a high school instructor whose extreme pessimism causes him to react to minor setbacks with intense despair, sometimes escalating to attempted suicide. The narrative uses his reactions and daily classroom encounters to satirically examine facets of modern Japanese society and culture. His students include Kiri Komori, a shut-in who rarely leaves the school; Abiru Kobushi, a mysterious girl who frequently arrives with unexplained, severe injuries; Kafuka Fuura, an excessively cheerful counterpart to Nozomu’s gloom; and a group of other distinctly odd female students. Through their interactions, the show blends social commentary with eccentric character-driven humor while maintaining a consistently bleak yet satirical tone.
