Synopsis

As a child, Utena Tenjou suffers the loss of both parents and is deeply affected until a passing prince comforts her, leaving her a ring bearing a rose emblem and a promise of reunion. That encounter shapes her identity and inspires her to take on the mantle of a prince. Years later she enrolls at Ootori Academy, where she notices a girl named Anthy Himemiya tending roses and encounters members of the Student Council, including President Touga Kiryuu and Vice President Kyouichi Saionji. A chance misunderstanding pulls Utena into the circle of Duelists—individuals who possess rings similar to her own and engage in formal duels. These conflicts center on Anthy, known as the Rose Bride, who is believed to hold a powerful, consequential role. Determined to live up to the prince’s example and outraged by Anthy’s treatment as an object, Utena chooses to fight in the duels to protect Anthy and challenge the system that binds her fate.
