Synopsis

Set in 19th-century Genoa, a nine-year-old boy named Marco faces the absence of his mother, Anna, who departs for Argentina to escape crushing taxes and severe economic decline. Left behind with his father, a physician serving the indigent, Marco struggles with the ache of separation and the uncertainty that follows when Anna’s letters suddenly cease. Consumed by worry and determined to reunite with her, he resolves to undertake a solitary voyage spanning more than 10,000 miles. Carrying only his devotion, bravery, and the bonds of friendship, Marco endures a difficult, lengthy journey across the Atlantic, over the Andes, and through emotional and spiritual challenges as he grows from a child into a young adult.
