Synopsis

Inspired by a passage from Edmondo de Amicis' novel Cuore, this story follows Marco, a young boy living in Genoa with his father Pietro. Marco's mother departed for Argentina about a year earlier to seek work; her letters arrive for a time but then cease unexpectedly. Troubled by the silence and fearful for her welfare, Marco resolves to journey to Argentina to find her. Initially resistant, Pietro is eventually persuaded by Marco's determination and permits him to undertake the voyage. The narrative traces Marco's long, emotionally driven journey as he meets a variety of people along the way and, through these encounters and challenges, develops greater maturity and a deeper sense of himself.
