Synopsis

An introverted oboist and her bright, popular flutist friend are assigned the principal parts in a concert band piece based on a bittersweet fairy tale about a lonely girl and a blue bird. As rehearsals progress, the pair—close high school seniors—find their emotional connection fraying, and their uneven duet worries the ensemble. With graduation approaching and little time left to refine their performance, both students struggle with mounting uncertainty and complex feelings while trying to inhabit the characters they must portray. Seeking a deeper understanding of the tale and their roles within it, they reexamine the story’s perspective and confront painful realities that test their bond. The film weaves together the gentle fairy tale, the music that reflects it, and the fragile dynamics of a late-high-school friendship, culminating in a painful choice that will determine how they express and accept their attachments.
