Set in the 11th year of the Meiji era, Japan bears the consequences of the samurai shogunate's fall and the ban on carrying swords. Discontented ex-samurai mount resistance against the new order, provoking violent conflict. To contain offenders, the government builds a vast prison on Lake Biwa. Tenka Kumou, informally aiding law enforcement, ferries prisoners to that island while living with his younger brothers Soramaru and Chuutarou; together with the ex-Fuma ninja Shirasu Kinjou, they maintain a modest, contented existence focused on study and training. Beneath their calm routine, a growing threat emerges: the legend of Orochi, a curse said to reincarnate in a human every three hundred years and signal looming disaster. As factions vie to locate Orochi's vessel, some seek to bind the curse while others pursue more sinister objectives, drawing the brothers into escalating conflict without revealing future outcomes.
