Synopsis

Hikaru Shindou uncovers an antique go board in his grandfather's attic. After touching it he hears a disembodied voice and loses consciousness; upon waking he realizes the voice belongs to Fujiwara no Sai, the lingering spirit of a Heian-era go master who once instructed the emperor. Sai's devotion to go endures beyond death, and he aims to attain a transcendent technique that no living player has reached by guiding moves through Hikaru. Initially indifferent to board games, Hikaru permits Sai to play through him. His attitude shifts after meeting Akira Touya, a young prodigy whose rivalry gradually kindles Hikaru's own enthusiasm for the game and sets him on a new path into the world of go.
