Once venerated as the Crown Prince of Xianle eight centuries ago, Xie Lian now returns to the celestial realm for a third time, diminished and collecting scraps with no followers. On his initial assignment he wanders alone beneath moonlight until a kindly man in red appears and leads him through a forest, then abruptly dissolves into a flutter of silver butterflies. That stranger is later revealed to be Hua Cheng, the feared Ghost King known as the Crimson Rain Sought Flower. Before Xie Lian can understand why Hua Cheng would aid a fallen Heavenly Official, he encounters San Lang, a young man whose extensive knowledge covers both the Ghost King and the long-forgotten Crown Prince.
