Synopsis

After being beaten and abandoned, Ryuunosuke Ibuki loses everything and is taken in by Kamo Serizawa, who offers him a role as his personal assistant. Although this rescue spares him from immediate despair, it reduces Ibuki to a subordinate position under one of Kyoto's most powerful figures. At the same time, escalating attacks by masterless samurai drive the shogunate to deploy the Roshigumi to restore order. Commanded by the principled but reserved Isami Kondou, the Roshigumi possesses combat skill yet lacks the political ties needed to operate within a crime-ridden city. To gain influence and strength, Kondou accepts an uneasy partnership with the proud and influential Serizawa. Despite his contempt for samurai, Ibuki becomes entangled with the Roshigumi and, through his interactions with Kondou's men, gradually reevaluates his assumptions about their character. Hakuouki Reimeiroku portrays the events leading to the emergence of the Shinsengumi against a backdrop of political tension and uncertainty in Kyoto.
