Synopsis

Kanji Sasahara, a reserved college freshman seeking belonging, discovers a campus group called the Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture (Genshiken) that gathers students around the full range of otaku interests. His initial encounter with the club leaves him embarrassed and denying any affinity for otaku pursuits after a harsh interaction with senior Harunobu Madarame. Through a developing friendship with fellow member Makoto Kousaka—who, despite his outward appearance, is deeply committed to otaku hobbies—Sasahara begins to participate more in the club’s activities: watching favored anime, reading fan-produced works, and attending conventions. Among the circle is Saki Kasukabe, Kousaka’s outspoken girlfriend who does not share otaku interests and attempts to encourage him toward a more conventional lifestyle. As Sasahara spends more time with Genshiken, he gradually abandons his earlier denial and becomes increasingly involved in the community and its routines, coming to accept and inhabit an otaku way of life.
