Synopsis

After losing her mother in an accident, 16-year-old Tooru moves in with her grandfather but cannot stay there during renovations. Not wanting to worry her relatives or burden friends, she secretly lives alone in a tent in the woods. One night her shelter is destroyed by a landslide, and Yuki Souma — admired at school — and his cousin Shigure, a well-known novelist, find her and offer temporary lodging. At the Souma residence Tooru learns a troubling secret: members of the Souma family undergo a temporary transformation into one of the zodiac animals if hugged by someone of the opposite gender. This transformation is treated not as a novelty but as a harmful curse with a troubling past. As Tooru becomes entwined with more members of the family, her compassionate yet determined nature is tested while she uncovers the difficulties and hidden history surrounding the Souma household.
