A masked samurai moves through Japan's cities at night, murdering five men tied to the Genjibotaru, a thieves' group focused on stealing Buddhist statues and artifacts and claiming identities linked to Minamoto no Yoshitsune's retainers. The investigation stalls when police lack motive and leads, until a Kyoto temple requests the aid of famed detective Kogorou Mouri after receiving an anonymous letter containing an unusual puzzle related to a missing statue. Conan Edogawa and high school detective Heiji Hattori join forces to unravel the cryptic message and identify the killer, drawing on Hattori's local knowledge of Kyoto. As they follow clues across the city, the murderer strikes again, killing another Genjibotaru member, making repeated attempts on Hattori's life, and ultimately abducting Hattori's childhood sweetheart. Conan and Hattori must combine their skills to uncover concealed evidence, stop the samurai's campaign of violence, and rescue the kidnapped woman.
