A Shinigami, asked by a peer curious about the human world, tells the tale of his encounter with Light Yagami, an exceptionally intelligent young man. Light discovers a lost Death Note at school and realizes it can end a person's life when their name is written while their face is pictured. Troubled by what he sees as societal decay, Light decides to use the notebook to eliminate criminals and pursue a vision of a renewed society. As unexplained fatal heart attacks among wrongdoers multiply, law enforcement grows suspicious and enlists L, a world-renowned investigator, to identify the source.
