Synopsis

In a future where rising seas have submerged most land, 15-year-old orphan Maia Mizuki finishes middle school and seeks entry into the Ocean Agency, a selective paramilitary branch of the global government reserved for top candidates. When she unexpectedly fails the entrance tests, her plans unravel: she is evicted, robbed, taken hostage, and shot, only to be rescued by two women, Rena and Shizuka, who work for an unconventional paid-assistance group called the Nereids. With no home to return to, Maia becomes part of this organization and accepts varied assignments ranging from apprehending fugitives to retrieving lost pets, each mission bringing unforeseen consequences. Two others, Gloria and Yu, later become members of the Nereids. A midseries subplot titled "Daphne" emerges and grows significant to Maia’s journey. The subtitle "Brilliant Blue" underscores the setting: a planet dominated by oceans, dotted with a handful of islands and floating cities.
