Synopsis

In a bleak, futuristic Californian metropolis where ambitions are crushed, a teenage resident of the slums named David Martinez strives to fulfill his late mother's aspiration that he reach the upper ranks of Arasaka, the foremost security corporation. He enrolls at Arasaka Academy while his mother struggles to support their family. After a violent encounter with a street gang devastates his life, David discovers Sandevistan cyberware — a prosthetic system that grants extraordinary speed. Driven by anger, he installs the device and uses it to retaliate against a tormentor, an act that leads to his expulsion from the academy and the collapse of his plan to make his mother proud. Observing his enhanced capabilities, a skilled data thief, Lucyna "Lucy" Kushinada, proposes an alliance, offering David a way out. Her introduction draws him into the realm of Edgerunners: enhanced criminals who commit illegal acts for payment. Life among Edgerunners carries extreme risks — many die or succumb to the psychological toll of augmentations — yet David, pushed by desperation and the corrupt structures around him, chooses to gamble everything to survive and pursue his aim.
