Koudo Ikusei Senior High appears ideal, offering students extensive freedom and national prestige. Beneath the surface, the school sorts pupils into four ranked classes—A through D—with advantages concentrated at the top. Kiyotaka Ayanokouji attends Class D, where those deemed least promising are placed. There he encounters Suzune Horikita, reserved and convinced her assignment is erroneous as she seeks promotion to Class A, and Kikyou Kushida, outwardly friendly and determined to be widely liked. Although class membership itself cannot be changed, rankings shift based on comparative performance, allowing lower-ranked students to overtake higher-ranked peers. In Class D, the usual constraints on tactics are loosened, creating a ruthless environment. The three must confront the system’s pressures and the cutthroat methods it permits as they attempt to climb the hierarchy without betraying their aims.
