Synopsis

Hideki Motosuwa, a poor young man preparing for university, discovers an abandoned humanoid personal computer while walking home. He brings the silent unit back, activates her, and finds she can only say a single sound that becomes her name, Chii. Unlike typical Persocoms, Chii cannot receive data transfers, so Hideki instructs her through everyday experience even as he studies for entrance exams. With friends, he investigates whether Chii might be a rare 'Chobit,' rumored to possess genuine feelings, independent thought, and the capacity for affection toward its owner. The story explores the emotional and ethical questions raised when machines adopt humanlike appearances and behavior, and whether affection between a human and such a device can truly be considered love.
