In a distant future where Earth is desolate and humans have vanished, sentient machines persist but face an inevitable decay. Once built to endure forever, they now confront rust and mortality after the fall of one called Luna, an event that triggered widespread collapse known as the Ruin. With no remedy for their corrosion, the surviving robots live under the shadow of their own endings, driven by a circulating belief that consuming a being named Casshern will grant eternal life. Casshern himself is a figure without memories or clear identity, unaware of his nature or purpose. Pursued by desperate automatons seeking escape from death, he travels through the wasteland, leaving death in his wake. To resolve the relentless pursuit and learn the reality of this ruined world, Casshern must discover the truth of his origin and confront the consequences of what he is.
