A legendary blue sapphire known as the "blue lapis fist," believed lost with a pirate ship off 19th-century Singapore, becomes the focus of a millionaire's recovery scheme. When the gem is displayed at an exhibition in a Marina Sands hotel, a murder occurs and a bloody calling card from the phantom thief Kaitou Kid is left at the scene. Meanwhile, Ran and Sonoko are visiting Singapore for a karate tournament. Conan, who cannot travel abroad without a passport and was expected to remain behind, is unwillingly brought to Singapore by Kid using a cunning trick so Kid can exploit his presence. To secure Conan's return to Japan, Kid compels him to comply; Conan is stripped of his glasses, watch, clothing, and other items and must adopt a disguise, using the alias Arthur Hirai when Ran, unaware of his true identity, questions him. Kid uncovers intelligence that the sapphire is kept in an underground vault beneath a manor, but the retrieval is complicated by a lethal trap and the presence of Makoto Kyogoku, an exceptionally powerful karateka with a streak of 400 consecutive wins, who stands in Kid's way.
