Synopsis

Years before rising to prominence in the Survey Corps, Levi ekes out a harsh existence in the capital’s refuse-filled Underground as leader of a small criminal band. Alongside partners Isabel Magnolia and Farlan Church, he struggles to survive on scant earnings until an anti-expedition politician, Nicholas Lobov, offers a perilous bargain: carry out an assassination of Survey Corps squad leader Erwin Smith in exchange for citizenship aboveground. When Levi encounters Erwin, the squad leader recognizes Levi’s talent and presents him with a stark ultimatum—join the expedition or be handed over to the Military Police to answer for his crimes. As Levi and his companions move closer to their assigned target and the slim hope of escape from their past, they confront the reality that emerging above the walls brings unexpected burdens, and that attaining freedom may demand severe sacrifice. This story, adapted from the related spin-off manga, depicts the formative meeting between two central figures from Shingeki no Kyojin and covers events surrounding the 23rd expedition beyond the walls.
