Located on the roof of Tenikai General Hospital, the unorthodox Department of Investigative Pathology is led by the idiosyncratic Dr. Takao Ameku. The compact unit, made up of Dr. Takao and her only trainee Yuu "Kotori" Takanashi, handles medically puzzling cases that other hospital divisions cannot resolve. Driven by an obsession with enigmas, Dr. Takao frequently inserts herself into investigations that intrigue her, often irritating colleagues and law enforcement. Though her interference can complicate matters for the hospital and those involved, her diagnostic insight is undeniable as she pieces together causes and conditions. Together with the occasionally resistant Takanashi, Dr. Takao confronts a variety of specialties and refuses to accept that any case is unsolvable.
