Synopsis

Nello Tarth, a cheerful orphan raised by his grandfather Jehan near Antwerp, loves drawing after being moved by a Rubens painting in childhood. While helping Jehan with milk deliveries, he finds Patrash, a mistreated working dog, nurses the animal back to health, and a loyal companionship grows. Alois Cojez, the daughter of Blacken Village’s wealthiest man, is Nello’s close friend, but Alois’s father regards Nello’s artistic ambitions as impractical and treats him with scorn. Despite hardship, social disdain, and financial struggle, Nello remains determined to develop as an artist and to earn the villagers’ recognition and respect without abandoning his principles or the bond he shares with Patrash.
