Synopsis

In a rural forest, Okina, a bamboo cutter, toils cutting hollow bamboo when he discovers an infant concealed in a luminous shoot. Convinced the child is a heavenly gift, he and his wife Ouna adopt her and name her Kaguya. She grows rapidly into a spirited girl, integrating with the village and enjoying childhood adventures among local children. Later, Okina uncovers a hidden hoard of gold and treasures in the woods; interpreting this as another divine bestowal, he uses the wealth to elevate his family’s status. They move to a mansion in the capital so Kaguya can be made into a princess, a transition that separates her from her friends and childhood life. As she adjusts to imposed nobility, the circumstances of her birth and the reasons she was sent to Earth begin to become apparent.
