Set against widening social divisions and mounting unrest, an Austrian princess is sent to France to marry the heir, a union arranged to secure political ties. The new queen struggles with a life predetermined by others, uneasy about having no say in her future. She soon encounters the Royal Guard’s Commander, raised as a son to fulfill his father’s wish for a male heir. Though admired by many, the Commander quietly longs to embrace a female identity rather than maintain a male facade. As duty binds the Commander to protect and serve the young, indulgent queen, the visible suffering and anger of the impoverished populace grow increasingly difficult to ignore, especially in light of the queen’s careless expenditures.
