A nine-year-old boy named Ren, bereft of family and kindness after a recent tragedy, drifts alone through the confusing streets and alleys of Shibuya. Rejected by his remaining relatives and without a home, he slips into the labyrinthine passages where he unexpectedly meets the fierce Kumatetsu, a formidable but aloof beast who takes Ren to the beast domain of Shibuten. Kumatetsu, a warrior with few equals, lacks disciples and recognition and views the boy as a way to qualify as a successor to the realm’s lord. Though their aims differ—Kumatetsu seeking validation and Ren (later called Kyuuta) seeking a place to belong—they form a pact to aid one another. Over time their relationship deepens, revealing that the gap between human and beast may be smaller than it first appeared, as each helps the other grow toward the home and acceptance they both lack.
