Synopsis

In the cozy Usagiyama Shopping District, a warm community of shopkeepers centers around Tama-ya, a small family mochi shop. Tamako Kitashirakawa, an endearingly awkward teenage girl, lives and works with her family making traditional sweets. One day she finds a talking bird who claims royal origin and a mission to locate a bride for his country’s prince. The bird, Dera Mochimazzi, becomes enamored with mochi, overeats to the point of losing the ability to fly, and ends up staying with Tamako’s household, where he grows into a familiar presence for the neighborhood. At the same time, Tamako’s childhood friend Mochizou Ooji quietly keeps his romantic feelings hidden while their fathers maintain a stubborn rivalry in the mochi trade. The story follows these characters as they adjust to life together, balance personal emotions, and consider what Dera’s search and the families’ rivalry mean for their relationships.
