Set in 2026, four years after the Sword Art Online events, a new Augmented Reality device called the Augma gains widespread use. Unlike earlier VR systems such as the NerveGear and Amusphere, the Augma operates while users remain conscious and is marketed as safe, quickly becoming popular. Its leading application, Ordinal Scale, is an AR fantasy role-playing title that ranks players and offers rewards, drawing large numbers of participants. Kirito initially harbors concerns about the platform, but his companions dive into the craze and he ultimately joins them. What begins as an entertaining competitive game gradually reveals unexpected and unsettling aspects beneath its surface.
