Synopsis

After the divine presence departs, mortality is frozen: no births occur and the deceased do not truly pass on, leaving restless corpses among the living. Before disappearing, the deity created gravekeepers—mystical individuals who can lay the dead to rest through proper interment. Ai, a bright yet inexperienced girl, took on the role for her community after her mother’s death. Her life is upended when Hampnie Hambart, a man presented as her father, arrives and wipes out her village. With her home gone and no clear path forward, Ai chooses to follow this enigmatic figure. As she travels, she continues her solemn duties—providing burials that allow the dead to find peace and offering aid to survivors—while gradually uncovering more about the ruined world left in the wake of God’s withdrawal.
