Synopsis

Lain Iwakura is a withdrawn fourteen-year-old who unexpectedly receives an unsettling message from classmate Chisa Yomoda, who recently took her own life. Despite Lain's limited interest in and familiarity with technology, opening that message pulls her into the Wired, a shared virtual network analogous to the internet. As she navigates this digital realm, Lain becomes entangled in a series of enigmatic occurrences: anonymous figures known as the Men in Black appear in her surroundings, posing probing questions and exhibiting knowledge about her that even she lacks. The distinction between everyday life and cyberspace steadily dissolves, and Lain is swept into increasingly surreal and disorienting events that challenge notions of identity, consciousness, and perception. Penned by Chiaki J. Konaka, the series is a psychological, avant-garde mystery that follows Lain as she faces pivotal decisions whose consequences span both the physical world and the Wired, ultimately confronting the meaning and impact of her existence in both spheres.
