In 1920s Japan, demonic forces assault the nation, prompting the government to deploy heavy, steam-driven armored machines. Only young women possessing a particular mix of moral resolve and inner spirit can synchronize with and operate these suits. Sakura, a newcomer from the countryside, arrives in the Imperial Capital to enlist in the Imperial Flower Combat Troop. Qualified to pilot a machine, she soon discovers the unit maintains a deliberate public façade as a musical theatre ensemble; members rigorously perform in costume and rehearse lines to preserve their cover. Sakura must adapt to the dual demands of theatrical discipline and mechanized warfare as she trains to contribute to the country's defense without revealing the troop's true mission.
