Synopsis

Romeo, a warm-hearted and brave boy from a small Swiss village, becomes targeted by Luini, nicknamed the God of Death, a man notorious for buying children and sending them to work as chimney sweeps in Milan. After Luini sets fire to Romeo’s family cornfield and Romeo’s father is injured trying to extinguish the blaze, Romeo chooses to sell himself to Luini so his family can afford medical care. En route to Milan, Romeo meets Alfredo Martini; the boys quickly bond and promise lifelong friendship before Alfredo is separated and sold to another master. In Milan, Romeo endures harsh treatment and exploitation from his master’s household and faces violence from a gang called the Wolf Pack. When Romeo and Alfredo are reunited, they establish a fraternity of chimney sweeps called the Black Brothers. Together, they confront the Wolf Pack’s threats, support one another through adversity, and strive to protect their newfound solidarity and hope.
