Synopsis

In small-town Brailsford Junction, Wisconsin, Sterling North leads a quiet life tending to animals while his family faces hardship: his mother lies in hospital and his brother serves on the Western Front. Living with his father and his dog Hauser, Sterling departs from routine for a fishing trip with his friend Oscar. During the outing they discover an abandoned raccoon kit whose mother was killed by a hunter for a fur hat. Sterling takes the orphaned animal into his care and names the mischievous, ring-tailed creature Rascal. As domestic strains and the war weigh on him, Sterling’s relationship with Rascal becomes a sustaining connection, grounding him and deepening his appreciation of life and companionship.
