Synopsis

A curious goldfish slips from home and hitches a ride on a jellyfish, only to become trapped in a jar that washes ashore. A five-year-old boy named Sousuke, who lives with his mother Lisa while his father works at sea, frees and befriends her. After she heals a cut on Sousuke’s finger by licking it, he gives her the name Ponyo. Ponyo, however, already belongs to an underwater family: her father Fujimoto, a sorcerer who abandoned his human life to dwell beneath the waves, searches desperately for his missing daughter Brunhilde. When he locates and captures her, Ponyo renounces her original name and declares a desire to be human. Empowered by the magic sparked through contact with Sousuke’s blood, she develops limbs and returns to the surface. The released magic disturbs the balance of nature, causing catastrophic tides and unsettling the Moon’s path. Reunited with Ponyo, Sousuke faces an ancient trial that will determine whether the world’s equilibrium can be restored and whether Ponyo may remain among people.
