Synopsis

Patema, a bold girl raised beneath the earth within an extensive tunnel network, is driven by memories of a vanished friend and repeatedly scolded for exploring despite her noble standing. Venturing into a restricted area, she is startled by an unfamiliar creature and tumbles into a vast chasm that deposits her on the surface — a place where gravity and orientation are reversed. As she begins to fall upward toward the sky, Age, a dissatisfied student from the authoritarian state of Aiga, rescues her. In Aiga, citizens are indoctrinated to fear and condemn people like Patema as dangerous heretics destined to be consumed by the sky, but Age rejects that doctrine and chooses to shelter her. Their unforeseen encounter sparks a cautious alliance between two inquisitive teens who navigate the challenges of their opposing environments and jointly pursue the origins and hidden realities of their peoples. The story maintains a gentle, hopeful tone as it examines trust, prejudice, and the effort to find coexistence between divided societies.
