Synopsis

The narrative is set in Tokyo during August and September of 1923, a period known as Taishou 12. This era depicts a metropolis characterized by profound disparities, where traditional customs coexist with modern advancements, and wealth stands in stark contrast to poverty. The urban landscape features both horse-drawn carriages and automobiles, and individuals wield both traditional swords and contemporary pistols, reflecting a society where ancient lords and modern businessmen navigate the same streets. Within this complex environment, a woman of significant social standing develops an interest in Taka, a young man whose connections, along with his younger brother's, appear to be with the city's organized crime syndicates, possibly under duress. Her personal maidservant, Sara, also encounters Taka, initiating a series of events that culminate in profound emotional turmoil, dishonor, and ultimately, a tragic outcome. As these personal dramas unfold, the story steadily approaches a pivotal historical moment: the Great Kanto Earthquake and subsequent tidal wave, which struck on September 1, 1923, at 11:58 AM. This catastrophic event resulted in the loss of nearly 100,000 lives, marking it as one of humanity's most devastating natural disasters.
