Synopsis

After a brutal six-year conflict known as the Lunar War leaves much of Eurasia devastated and billions dead, humanity relies on giant combat suits called Tactical Surface Fighters to counter the alien BETA, whose powerful laser weapons can annihilate conventional aircraft. In 1998, military school student and TSF operator Yui Takamura helps defend Kyoto against a BETA assault, a battle that repels the enemy but costs many lives and leaves Yui scarred by loss. By 2001 she is a lieutenant assigned to the XFJ project, a Japan–U.S. joint program in Alaska tasked with advancing TSF design. Within an international test team that includes the aloof Japanese–American pilot Yuuya Bridges and other eishi drawn from nations fallen to the BETA, Yui must balance technical development of the new Japanese unit Shiranui with the fraught political legacy of the Cold War. The series follows Yui’s responsibility to prevent future catastrophe and Yuuya’s struggle to confront personal demons amid the pressures of multinational military collaboration.
