At the turn of the millennium, the rundown premises of Ginei Studio face demolition. Genya Tachibana, a former staffer turned filmmaker, decides to mark this moment with a documentary focused on the studio’s celebrated actress, Chiyoko Fujiwara, a withdrawn icon of Shōwa-era cinema. After gaining access to the retired star, Genya brings along the skeptical cameraman Kyouji Ida to meet her, determined to revive attention on the woman who inspired him. Nestled in a remote mountain home, Chiyoko holds memories that compress decades of history into one life. Her storytelling carries them into a hallucinatory passage through Japan’s filmic past: her career narrative weaves into the films she made, performers from her life merge with their on-screen personae, and present moments fold into earlier ones. Though she left the profession at the peak of her fame thirty years prior, Chiyoko’s personal story continues to unfold like an unfinished performance.
