Arsène Lupin III realizes the proceeds from his recent casino heist are not ordinary loot but extraordinarily convincing counterfeit notes known as Gothic Bills. Concerned about their origin, he and his partner Daisuke Jigen travel to the small principality of Cagliostro to trace the source. Early in their investigation they intervene during a high-speed chase and rescue a young woman, Clarisse d' Cagliostro, who is the daughter of the deceased Duke d' Cagliostro. Clarisse is fleeing a dark scheme engineered by Count Cagliostro, who intends to appropriate her family's wealth through a coerced marriage. Lupin, who habitually dislikes seeing a woman endangered, resolves to help her. The effort draws others into the conflict: the swordsman Goemon Ishikawa XIII, the enigmatic Fujiko Mine, and inspector Kouichi Zenigata each arrive with personal reasons to be involved. As the group converges on Cagliostro Castle, Lupin recalls a visit he made there a decade earlier, and the castle gradually reveals hidden mysteries connected to the present threat.
