Synopsis

Set in 19th-century France, this story follows Fantine, a struggling single mother who entrusts her three-year-old daughter, Cosette, to the care of the Thénardiers. The couple proves cruel, turning Cosette into an abused and overworked child. Despite the mistreatment, Cosette clings to the hope of reuniting with her mother. One night, while running errands, Cosette encounters Jean Valjean, an upright stranger who recognizes something in her and removes her from the Thénardiers' control. They travel to a nearby town where Cosette’s life changes under Jean Valjean’s protection. With a new sense of security, Cosette vows to use her freedom to help others and to work toward relieving France’s widespread poverty and suffering. Though the country bears the scars of revolution and further hardships lie ahead, Cosette remains determined to pursue a path of compassion and social healing.
