Synopsis

The narrative explores the profound choices one makes when confronted with a finite existence, particularly regarding communication and final sentiments. The story introduces Reito Naoi, a man in his early twenties, whose life takes an abrupt turn following an unfair termination from his employment. Driven by anger and a desire for retribution, he attempts to appropriate a significant item from his former workplace, an endeavor that results in his apprehension. While incarcerated, Reito receives an unforeseen visit from legal counsel, who proposes his liberation contingent upon his agreement to fulfill the demands of their undisclosed client. With no other options apparent, Reito agrees, subsequently learning that the client is his own aunt. Upon Reito expressing his lack of future aspirations, she issues a directive: to become the guardian of a specific camphor tree. This marks the commencement of Reito's role as custodian of a camphor tree located within a shrine's premises, a tree imbued with an enigmatic folklore.
