In a devastated landscape where a tree has grown through an abandoned railcar, a small group of girls who possess unusual powers struggle to survive while searching for the last sources of water. Their precarious routine changes when Wakaba, a boy who remembers only his name, appears. Together they undertake a hazardous voyage across expanses filled with burning red fog toward distant islands that are infested with mechanical insect swarms. Their survival depends on their resilience and on Wakaba’s unique capacity to comprehend the Kemurikusa, luminous leaves that hold strange abilities and represent one of the few remaining signs of life. Beyond the girls, Wakaba, and the ravenous bugs, the Kemurikusa are the lone living remnants in this empty world. Questions about how society collapsed and why so many buildings stand deserted remain unanswered; those answers lie connected to the Kemurikusa and may only be uncovered through the journey they must undertake.
